When the defender of Jefferson saying " Why, I would just as soon put a hog in the electric chair as this" (p.8) got backfired because at that time there are still racism in the South. The attorney's purpose is to say that all black people is like a hog, but in that time he was preferring to Jefferson. The attorney want to show that Jefferson is too stupid to consider to be a man. The remark affected Miss Emma and Taute Lou because they didn't raise a hog. They raised a man, Miss Emma want Jefferson to sit in that chair like a man. Miss Emma won't bring Jefferson corns to eat because she don't want him to act like a hog.
Miss Emma want Grant to teach him to be like a man. When Miss Emma found out that Jefferson was eating like a hog, she was angry. She know that Jefferson is going to die, but she don't want a hog to sit in that chair because she didn't raise one. When Taute Lou heard about Jefferson, she was outraged. She and Miss Emma worked so hard for the community for them to be treated like this.
